Well there's more in the "on going" stroy of my changing from Cable to DSL

Today is the ONE MONTH point of trying to get thing to work on this subject. I've have now bought a 2nd router. Tried them on 2 differant computers and I still can't get thing to work for more than a few hour before I'm no longer able to go to a new webpage. After working with Linksys since the 10th they finally told me that it most be do to a power or signal interrupt. Back to SBC. And after more than an hour I got the SBC guys to say, "Call us back when it happens again and we can help you. Now you have a fine signal. At lease I know that all I have to do is power down everthing and wait a minute and I'll be find. But I'm not letting them know that.

He, the guy from SBC ( an Indian, you know the kind from the other side of the world) tried to trap me into say that and then getting me to agree. As I threatened to close my account early enought so as I didn't have to paid any penalty.

Anyone want to buy a 8 port Linksys router for $107.00? By the way Linksys is Cisco. I own stock in them. And glad of it. Boy is it fun screwing with them...

WARNING WARNING WARNING

Virus Warning for Windows Users - Very Serious
Microsoft has yet another very serious security
flaw that gives anyone with
the right know how total access to your computer. I
don't know all the
details - but it might be the biggest one yet. If
you remember the SoBig
and Code Red viruses last fall - this one will
similar in that it doesn't
require you to get email for you to be attacked or
hacked. *Your computer
can be hacked into and viruses installed without
you doing anything to
cause it to happen.

*I say "will be" because right now there is no
virus - yet. But the flaw is
there and it will be a matter of days before
someone writes a virus to take
advantage of the flaw. And - your anti-virus
software will have no effect.
Microsoft has posted a patch and that is how you
protect yourself -
download and install that patch.

I'LL BE CHECHING DAYLY FOR THE NEXT WEEK OR SO...

Tech stuff - Say "Hi" to Walter Mossberg you may have seen him on TV

Here is his page on "A Guide to New PCs, Now Offering Users More Multimedia Toys"
http://ptech.wsj.com/ptech.html

His Home page
http://ptech.wsj.com/

One of the reasons why I like Walter is he tell ya that more RAM will show you more from your computer, not a faster chip. It's true. So, if your thinking your puter needs to be replaced, "Maybe not, maybe it just needs to go to 512 MB of memory from 256 MB. Or if your looking to add a puter his Guide will help you well.
My fastest chip in the 6 or 7 puters we run here is a 550. But I have no less than 512 MB of memory. Most have more.
There is one place he and I don't agree and that is he says " Brands: All Windows PCs are similar, but unless you're a techie, stick with names like Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, eMachines and Gateway." I say use your local to you computer builder. I you need help with you puter he's right there were you are. He may come to you. But you won't be trying to talk to someone in India or alike. NOt long ago we spent 5 hrs. on the phone with a Problem with her laptop. Just about all the majors have sent the suporrt jobs overseas. Buy local and support small bussiness in America. I don't think Walter can say that as he is in the Wall Street Journal's employ. You can also see Walter on TV ever Thursday on CNBC around 1:30 est. talking about technology news.

PUT IT IN YOUR YAHOO CALENDAR AND WHEN YOUR ONLINE HAVE THE YAHOO INSTANT MESSENGER ON AND THE MESSENGER CAN TELL YOU OF YOUR APPOINTMENTS. If you need to know more call me at Keen.com

Fine tuning an, not too old, email

The old email read:
Defrag to Speed Up Windows XP:

When writing information to your hard disk, Windows isn't the most careful shelf stocker. Sometimes, it breaks files apart, stuffing them into nooks and crannies. Unfortunately, Windows then takes longer to retrieve the files. To speed things up, use the Disk Defragmenter: Use the Rearrange Items on My Hard Disk task that pops up when you choose the Control Panel's Performance and Maintenance category.
Run Disk Defragmenter every few weeks, especially if your computer seems to be running slowly or you can hear your hard drive making frantic rummaging noises. I defrag weekly, but you know I have my puters running all day. So, it usage too.

The fine tuning thought from a reader:

I learned about computers from some of the old schoolers and it was commonly said not to run defrag more often than 3 weeks because more often will wear down your drive mechanically. Defrag is very intensive on your disk. Now on the other hand, if you don't mind endorsing brands... Norton Utilities' "Speed Disk" does the same basics as defrag plus it rearranges files on the drive so the more often accessed files re put on the faster part of the platter, including the windows swap file ( This works especially well when you lock the swap file size to a certain amount) Just some thoughts from my end.

Thanks, to SablePanther. And hopefully we'll hear more from the SablePanther in the future.

THE IDEA HERE IS TO HELP PEOPLE WITH COMPUTING AND TO MAKE COMPUTING SAFER. I LEARNED WHAT I KNOW FROM OTHERS, EITHER IN THEIR BOOK OR SCHOOLS, OR FROM THEM FIRST HAND. I JUST PASS IT ON. AND I'M STILL LEARNING. INPUT FROM BARB, JIM, TODD, BOB, AND BILL AND OTHERS IS ALWAYS WANTED AND LIKED.
