Netflix Takes Over Wal-Mart DVD Rental Busniess

SAN FRANCISCO - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is handing off its online DVD rental business to Netflix Inc., signaling the world's largest retailer couldn't beat the Internet upstart at its own game.
Thursday's David-defeats-Goliath announcement boosted Netflix's shares, which gained 63 cents, or 4.1 percent, to close at $16.13 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The shares shed 13 cents in after-hours trading, but soared as high as $19.27 earlier in the day.
Wal-Mart is offering its existing online DVD rental customers the chance to continue their subscriptions with Los Gatos-based Netflix at their current price for the next year. Those who don't sign up with Netflix by June 17 will lose their service. Wal-Mart plans to continue promoting the Netflix service on its Web site.
In return, Netflix will urge its 3 million subscribers to buy DVDs from Walmart.com.

Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO - news) announced Wednesday the launch of a public beta for its newest Yahoo Messenger, which can connect customers anywhere through a PC-to-PC calling service.
The voice-chat capabilities of earlier versions have been enhanced to make PC-to-PC calling easier. The new Messenger calling service also provides voice-mail that can be left and retrieved through a call history log.
Users also can make their PC-to-PC calling more personalized by customizing ring tones for friends and family.
"Talking to your computer no longer means you are crazy," said Brad Garlinghouse, vice president of communications products for Yahoo.
Voice services will continue to be enhanced and extended as a core component of Yahoo Messenger, Garlinghouse said.
"We are committed to providing a world-class IM experience for consumers," he said.
The "next generation" Yahoo Messenger, as the company calls it, also features a new drag-and-drop capability to ease the transfer of multiple files between customers. Thumbnails will specify what type of file is being transferred.
The drag-and-drop feature is a key component to the new Yahoo Messenger's photo-sharing capability, which simulates looking at photos in person by letting users view photos together via instant message.
New tools in Yahoo Messenger give users access to Yahoo's online community forum, Yahoo 360. Indicators will appear next to friends' IDs, signaling to users that they've posted new content, such as blogs or photos.
Yahoo Messenger also will work with the company's new Music Unlimited. Users will be able to browse and listen to friends' music playlists through Messenger.
In addition, enhanced SpamGuard software will work with the new Yahoo Messenger to boost users' protection and to let customers report spam or unsolicited messages to Yahoo through IM.
The new Yahoo Messenger is launching in localized versions for 18 countries throughout the world.

Three Little Words That Work !!
(1)The three little words are: "Hold On, Please..."
Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off
(instead of
hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so
much more
time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.
Then when you eventually hear the phone company's
"beep-beep-beep" tone,
you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which
has
efficiently completed its task.
These three little words will help eliminate telephone
soliciting.
(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the
other
end?
This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone
calls and
records the time of day when a person answers the phone.
This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a
"real" sales
person to call back and get someone at home.
What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one
there, is to
immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7
times, as
quickly as possible . This confuses the machine that dialed the
call and it
kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to
have your
name in their system any longer !!!
(3) Junk Mail Help:
When you get "ads" enclosed with your phone or utility bill,
return these
"ads" with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their
own junk
mail away.
When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for
everything from
credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw
away the
return envelope.
Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right?
It costs them more than the regular 37 cents postage "IF" and
when they
receive them back.
It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was
around 50
cents before! the last increase and it is according to the
weight. In that
case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it
in these
cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express.
Send a pizza
coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day,
then just
send them their blank application back!
If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't
on anything
you send them.
You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to
keep them
guessing! It still costs them 37 cents.
The banks and credit card companies are currently
getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we
need to
OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of
junk
mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!
Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying
that e-mail
is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need
to
increase postage costs again. You get the idea !

IT Specialist Snares A Laptop Thief

Not long after a burglar broke into her home and stole her prized Apple iPod and iBook laptop, Karen Todd of Bowie, Maryland, decided to use her computer expertise to see if the items stolen from her home might show up on the Internet.
Sure enough, the mother of two and computer programs designer, logged onto eBay and found the stolen items for sale. "I was shocked and almost in tears," she told the Washington Post about finding her inscribed iPod. "I was like, 'That's mine! That's mine!' I was just floored. When I found it (the iPod), I clicked on 'see seller's other items,' and when I scrolled through, lo and behold, there was my [laptop]."
Todd, who is an IT specialist at the U.S. Census Bureau, tracked the stolen items to a Maryland sports memorabilia dealer, who said when he bought the items from a Sierra Leone national, he didn't know they were stolen. The burglar was arrested earlier this month and has been languishing in jail.
As for Karen Todd, she is getting her stolen items returned and a $100 Best Buy gift certificate to boot, to be presented by the Bowie police department to honor her public spirit and help in putting a burglar out of commission. The Bowie City Council is planning to honor her with a special commendation.
