Yahoo Launches New Local Search Engine

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc., seeking to compete for local advertising dollars while at the same time countering a similar push by Google, on Monday rolled out a test version of a local search engine that gives users phone numbers, maps, ratings and reviews for a range of services.

Yahoo has set up the new Yahoo Local as a direct competitor to Google's own local search service, one of many new platforms that company has rolled out as its moves toward its highly anticipated initial public offering.

Like Google, Yahoo's aim is to cash in on local advertising, a market worth billions of dollars in revenue and a relatively small Internet presence.

"Local information is kind of Yahoo's heritage and in our blood," Paul Levine, general manager of Yahoo Local, told Reuters. "When an audience starts to look at local information we see an opportunity to really capitalize on those dollars from a local perspective."

Levine pegged online spending as less than one half of one percent of local ad spending overall.

The new Yahoo local engine, which became available late Monday night Pacific Time, prompts users to search for a service, like "restaurants" or "dentists," along with a location, and then returns results like business name, address and phone number.

Users can refine the results by rating, distance from a specific point and other factors. Maps show the location of specific businesses and can be enhanced with the locations of parking lots and ATMs.

For restaurants, the search engine will offer editorial reviews and data like price and atmosphere, as well as an opportunity for users to contribute their own reviews.

Yahoo has partnered with a number of companies for its data, Levine said, in an effort to be comprehensive. Test searches on the engine returned results from major cities as well as smaller communities like Yuma, Arizona and French Lick, Indiana.

"People will break it in the early going," Levine said. "It's not perfect but we do think it works really well."

YES, I'M A BAD AMERICAN

When I told someone that I was going to put this on my blog they said, I shouldn't, that I could loss customers over it. Well I see it this way, It should attract people I like and should enjoy working with, and kept away people that probably wouldn't enjoy me and I them...
Everyone wins.

I Am Your Worst Nightmare. I am a BAD American. I am George Carlin.

I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some mid level governmental functionary, be it Democratic or Republican!

I think owning a gun doesn't make you a killer, it makes you a smart American.

I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and does not entitle you to anything.

I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac, try to do it in English.

I think fireworks should be legal on the 4th of July.

I think that being a student doesn't give you any more enlightenment than working at Blockbuster. In fact, if your parents are footing the bill to put your pansy ass through 4 years plus of college, you haven't begun to be enlightened.

I believe everyone has a right to pray to his or her God when and where they want to.

My heroes are John Wayne, Babe Ruth, Roy Rogers, and whoever canceled Jerry Springer.

I don't hate the rich. I don't pity the poor.

I know wrestling is fake and I don't waste my time arguing about it.

I've never owned a slave, or was a slave, I didn't wander forty years In the desert after getting chased out of Egypt. I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks and neither have you! So, shut the hell up already.

I want to know which church is it exactly where the Reverend Jesse Jackson practices, where he gets his money, and why he is always part of the problem and not the solution. Can I get an AMEN on that one?

I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry ass if you're running from them.

I also think they have the right to pull you over if you're breaking the law, regardless of what color you are.

I think if you are too stupid to know how a ballot works, I don't want you deciding who should be running the most powerful nation in the world for the next four years.

If this makes me a BAD American, then yes, I'm a BAD American.

If you are a BAD American too, please forward this to everyone you know.

We need our country back!

I agree! Suprise, suprise

SOUTH Korea's Daum to Buy Lycos for $95 Mln

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's top Web site operator Daum Communications Corp., said on Monday it would acquire Lycos Inc., the U.S. business of Spain's Terra Lycos, owner of popular sites such as Wired News and Tripod, for $95 million.

The deal underlines the growing global ambitions of technology companies in South Korea, which has more broadband connections per head than any other country, although analysts were not convinced of its investment merits.

"The buyout will provide a springboard for our company to venture into the U.S. Internet market and become a global player, Daum said in a disclosure statement to the Kosdaq exchange.

Daum will acquire 100 percent of Lycos for 111.2 billion won ($95.44 million) in cash. Terra bought Lycos in an all-stock deal in May 2000 worth $12.5 billion at the time, which was near the height of the Internet boom.

Daum will finance the deal with 70 billion won of its cash reserves and a bond issue, the statement said.

Daum, the fifth-biggest stock on the Kosdaq, rose 2.44 percent to 33,600 won as of 10:20 p.m. EDT Sunday, outperforming the wider market's 0.39 percent fall.

Lycos is ranked seventh in the United States in terms of site visits and has about 170,000 paid users, according to data provided by Daum.

South Korea has 28.6 million Internet users, or more than 60 percent of its population, and more than 11 million broad-band service subscribers, according to government data.

Ever wonder why Google is coming to market the way it is, a Dutch Auction...

Well, it could beause Yohoo is suring Google. And not broker wants to handle it. I really don't know any for sure here, just my guess. More input;

Analysis of the Google/Overture Suit (Overture is owned by Yahoo)

Overture, the Yahoo search engine marketing division, began life as GoTo.com, a search service that let advertisers bid for placement at the top of the listings. Advertisers' listings were clearly marked, along with how much they'd paid to be there. In 2001, GoTo.com was awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,269,361, known as the '361 patent. The rest of this story

Some of the stuff that has me NOT buying in on the IPO. He who does Due-Diligece Wins.
